Manager John Robertson made three changes to the starting line up that drew 2-2 with Alloa Athletic as Dave Carson, James Keatings and Mitch Curry all came in to replace Aaron Doran, Roddy MacGregor and Charlie Trafford.

Inverness got off to a disastrous start as Morton broke the deadlock after six minutes.

Peter Grant’s pass forward found McHugh who beat the offside trap and with only Mark Ridgers to beat, chipped the goalkeeper from 18 yards to weight the ball perfectly into the back of the net.

Inverness responded when Carl Tremarco managed to connect with Shaun Rooney’s corner but his header hit the right post from close range.

Caley Thistle went close again when Miles Storey won the ball in the air and sent through James Keatings with only the goalkeeper to beat but fired his low drive straight at Sam Ramsbottom.

Inverness continued to put on the pressure when Storey’s free kick into the box fell to Keatings but he couldn’t keep his shot down as it went flying over the bar from 15 yards.

But Caley Thistle levelled before the half hour mark when Curry got on to the end of a Jordan White long ball and fired a low drive past Ramsbottom.

Inverness started the second half brighter with Rooney forcing a good save from Ramsbottom with a powerful low shot from 12 yards.

Storey went close with a shot from the edge of the box which flashed wide of the right post.

But Morton regained the lead 10 minutes from time when Coll Donaldson failed to clear a ball from the edge of the box and McHugh pounced to fire a low drive through Ridgers' legs from 12 yards and earn Morton all three points
