The midfielder had to be carried off in the first half after picking up an injury soon after Montrose had taken the lead 10 minutes before the break.

Head coach Scott Kellacher says the club’s medical staff are looking at the extent of Longstaff’s injury.

He said: “He is getting assessed with the physios.

“He may have tweaked his hamstring and we weren’t taking chances so we took him off as a caution.

“We will see how he settles in the next few days.”

Inverness had to fight back to earn a point against Montrose after Callum Sandilands gave the visitors the lead in the 34th minute. Keith Bray, who is back on loan at Inverness after signing for Dunfermline, equalised with 10 minutes remaining, but the hosts could not find a winner.

Inverness have moved to within one point of Annan Athletic in eighth after they lost 3-0 to Arbroath.

Kellacher says it is frustrating Inverness were not able to take advantage of the result at Gayfield and move out of the bottom two.

He said: "It was a slow start where we never took control of the game in the first half.
"We were too safe at times, we are the home team, we need to be more on the front foot. We never got into our stride and then we lose the goal.
"I want us to start games the way we played in the second half. It was a scrappy game where we never got going.

“We had chances in the second half but we were far from our best today, but it wasn’t for not wanting to win it.

“We need to win the game, draws are not enough. We threw every attacking player on the park. We didn’t want to settle for the draw. It was a frustrating day all round.”

“We have gone shy about putting balls into the box and we need to start doing that. If we do that, we will win more games.”
