Inverness Caley Thistle record goalscorer and coach Billy Mckay to consider playing future at the end of the season
Billy Mckay has admitted he may have a decision to make over where his future lies at Inverness Caledonian Thistle this summer.
The 36-year-old striker has been part of the coaching team in the Highland capital since Caley Thistle were plunged into administration at the end of October, combining the role with his playing duties.
He has still played a key part for the club this season, making 40 appearances across all competitions.
However, with the news last week that Alan Savage was joint-administrators BDO’s preferred bidder to take the Caley Jags forward, securing their long-term future, Mckay will have to weigh up whether to continue pulling double duty on and off the pitch.
The club’s all-time record goalscorer says he will sit down and have that conversation when the season has drawn to a close, but in the meantime his sole focus is on ensuring ICT remain in League One for next season.
“I’ve tried to put that to the back of my mind – and it’s probably no surprise to anyone that I’ve played more than I should have because of the injuries, which have come at the worst time of the season,” he explained.
“That’s no excuse for us. We’ve still got a good enough squad to go and get wins, but I possibly do have a decision to make.
“I’m not getting any younger. I felt my hamstring quite early in the game against Kelty and managed to get through, so I’ll need to see how that reacts.
“As long as I feel like I’m still helping the team, and speaking to the lads they still appreciate what I can give on the pitch even though I haven’t scored as many as I hoped I would have and should have this season, that’s the main thing.
“Maybe I have a decision to make in the summer, but I’m completely focused on helping the club stay up, and when that happens I’ll sit down and have a chat, and we’ll see what happens.”
Last Thursday’s announcement that Savage would be buying the club and leading them out of administration had fans across the city celebrating.
It provides reassurance for the club’s staff and players, but as far as Mckay was concerned that made the 2-0 defeat to Kelty Hearts on Saturday all the more disappointing.
“We had that brilliant news on Thursday, and we wanted to keep that feel-good factor, but it didn’t happen,” Mckay added.
“You can’t underestimate what Alan has done for the club up to this point, and coming in and willing us to take it over is huge.
“Nobody wanted to see the club fall away, it means so much to ex-players, current players and employees and myself, so it was great news.
“We’ve just got to do our job now and make sure we stay in the division. We’ve got three games to do it, and it’s still in our hands, so we’ve got to take the bull by the horns and get the wins we need to make it happen.”
