The 22-year-old, who played for Inverness in the Championship last season and is the son of former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher spent the second half of last season at the Caledonian Stadium from Wigan Athletic.

He switched international allegiances from England to Malta as he qualifies to play for them through his great-grandfather.

On Friday, he made his international debut as he started for Malta in their World Cup Qualification Group G match against Finland at the Ta' Qali National Stadium.

Malta were unable to cause an upset as they went down to a 1-0 defeat with Oliver Antman, who plays as a winger for Dutch side Go Ahead Eagles, scoring the only goal of the game, seven minutes before half time.

Carragher played the entire 90 minutes for Malta, who were reduced to 10 men after his teammate Kurt Shaw was sent off in the 78th minute.

Malta are bottom of their qualification group after one match with zero points. They are in the same group as Finland, Lithuania and Poland, along with the loser of Sunday night’s Nations League Group A play-off second leg clash between Spain and the Netherlands.

Carragher could win his second cap for Malta on Monday night when they are set to face Poland in Warsaw.

Meanwhile, Inverness Caledonian Thistle goalkeeper Musa Dibaga could win his first international cap for Gambia if he is selected to start in their World Cup qualification match away to the Ivory Coast on Monday.

Dibaga was on the bench in Gambia’s 3-3 draw with Kenya on Thursday with Ebrima Jarju, who plays for Paide Linnameeskond in Estonia, given the gloves.

He was missing for Inverness in their 1-1 draw against Alloa Athletic at the Caledonian Stadium on Saturday. Inverness brought in Aidan Rice from Celtic on an emergency loan deal.
