Nairn County snap up former Ross County forward Matthew Wright as Ross Tokely continues building Station Park squad ahead of 2024/25 Highland League season

Nairn County have confirmed the signing of former Ross County striker Matthew Wright.

The 21-year-old becomes the Wee County’s fifth signing of the summer after leaving the Staggies upon the expiration of his contract.

Wright signs a two-year contract at Station Park, and joins Ben Barron and Gary Kerr as permanent recruits to Ross Tokely’s attacking options this week.

Nairn have also brought in Alan Pollock and Jonathan Bain this summer as they prepare for the 2024/25 Highland League season.

Tokely said: “Matthew is a player we have worked really hard to bring to the club, so I am absolutely delighted that it is over the line and he is now going to join us.

“He comes to us with a great pedigree and will add another dimension to our forward line with his pace and finishing ability. I saw that first hand for myself when he played against us for Ross County in pre-season last year.

“I have followed his career closely having seen him play at youth level when I was coaching at Inverness CT. I think he has done well in his loan spells in the Highland League and Scottish leagues but he has now reached the stage in his career where he is looking for regular football every week at the same club over the course of the next few seasons.

“We will give him the opportunity to do that and to go out and express himself and hopefully make a valuable contribution to the progress of the team.

“I believe Matthew has the ability to step back up again to the SPFL in the future but in the meantime, we are delighted to have him as part of our squad and the management team are all really looking forward to working with him to see what he can do in the Highland League next season.”

Wright, originally from Stornoway, came through the academy system in Dingwall, making his senior debut away at Rangers in December 2020.

He would spend the first half of the following season on loan at Brora Rangers, where he raced to the top of the goalscoring charts with 17 goals in 18 appearances.

That would prompt County to recall him, and he would quickly make an impact with a stoppage time equaliser for the Staggies against Rangers in Dingwall.

After that, he has a solid loan spell at League One outfit Montrose, before frustrating times at Falkirk, Elgin City and Brechin City amidst health issues over the last year.
