Inverness club Highland Boxing Academy celebrates three fighters winning gold at National Development Championships at Ravenscraig

HIGHLAND Boxing Academy celebrated a hat-trick of gold medallists as three of their athletes were crowned Scottish champions at the National Development Championships.

Kian Stewart, Alexander Russell and Brodie Zineldin were all crowned Scottish champions at Ravenscraig last weekend.

Joe Kinsella claimed a silver medal in his category and Luke Urquhart reached the final of his category and will box for gold later this month.

Zineldin had to move up a weight division to get a bout as he fought in the 86kg category. But the step up in weight class proved no problem as he claimed gold.

Stewart also had to move up a division to be able to compete at 56kg, but he showed his quality as he also claimed gold by a unanimous decision.

Highland Boxing Academy head coach Liam Foy says it was outstanding performances from all five fighters against some of the best up and coming talent in Scotland.

He said: “Brodie and Kian both didn’t have anyone in their original weight categories and chose to move up a weight division to get a bout.

“They were both dominant in their finals and won by unanimous decisions. They weren’t at their natural weight divisions but did not look out of sorts. To be boxing up at a higher class and win by unanimous decision is not an easy task.

“Alexander won at the Developments in October and showed he could develop up the ranks. He had quite a challenging fight but managed to come through it.

“Joe started his bout well, but his opponent came back strong in the final round. It was a bit of a smash and grab and secured victory by a split decision.

“We have three gold medals and one silver medal with one final still to be decided.

“Luke Urquhart is in one of the busiest categories of the competition which was impacted by the storm. His final will not be taking place until next month.

“He is on a phenomenal run at the moment. He boxed at the end of October where he steamrolled through the division so he has picked up from where he left off.

“The medal has not been secured yet, but he has made a really good mark and set himself up nicely for his place in the final.”
