His mother Susan says Matthew has been working hard preparing for the championships and is looking forward to testing himself against the best in Europe.

“Matthew is looking to complete the challenge within the next three weeks," she said.

“We have been trying to get funding from sport bodies but have been unable to do so.

“However, friends wanted to help Matthew for the championship, so that is when we decided to hold the fundraising challenge.

“Competing at the European Championships will be a new experience for Matthew as he has not raced in a 50 metre pool before. He is excited to take part at the European Championship and is confident he can do well.”
