Waterloo Bowling Club keep on rolling after 100 years in Inverness





ROLLING on after 100 years of action on the green, a bowls club in Inverness celebrated its centenary with a special event.

Waterloo Bowling Club marked its landmark anniversary with a ceremony which took place at Inverness Town House.

The venue, which is thought to be one of the oldest bowls green in Inverness, was established in 1923.

The club is still going strong after 100 years with a strong membership at the club on the banks of River Ness.

President Angus Shearer welcomed club members and guests to the event held at the Town House to celebrate the club’s centenary.

Vice president Kathy Macdonald says it was a great event to mark a club which has played an important part for the bowls community in Inverness.

“We had 60 guests in attendance at the Inverness Town House,” she said.

“All of the ex-presidents of the club were invited to the ceremony and a special presentation also took place with the deputy provost in attendance too.”

Waterloo Bowling Club has achieved major success in competitions over the years and had players represent Scotland at international level in the past.

It included Jean Millwood who is a former Scottish champion.

Macdonald, who is coming up to 10 years acting as vice president says during her time at the club, she has seen a lot of changes at the venue.

She said the club is also active in promoting the sport in the city as it attempts to attract more people to take up the sport.

“We host a big disability bowling event every year,” she said.

“We have made a lot of improvements to facilities at the club, which has included putting in a new kitchen.

“We are also looking at carrying out other work to the venue."

Waterloo Bowls Club currently have 36 members at the club which is based at Riverside Street with six new members joining this year as numbers joining are heading in the upward direction.

Macdonald also said that the club are always looking for new members to join.

“Our oldest member is 90 and our youngest member is 55,” she said.

“We are club which enjoys taking part in competitions and we always enter the Scottish Championships as well as travelling to other clubs to play them at game.”
