INVERNESS Gaelic Choir is looking for an assistant musical director and seeks “a dynamic, passionate and creative soul”.

The right person would assist musical director Mary Ann Kennedy and Gaelic reader Janet MacGregor.

The deadline for applications is Friday, January 13.

The assistant musical director would work under the guidance of Mary Ann to lead approximately 20 of the choir’s Wednesday evening rehearsals per year at their meeting place in central Inverness, to direct some of the choir’s performances and potentially conduct the ladies’ choir in competition.

The job description suggests the role would be particularly suited to someone wanting to develop their conducting skills.

The choir has a dedicated pool of 35-40 singers, a well-organised committee and creative leadership and the choir follows a regular schedule of competitive performance, culminating in the premier choral competitions of the National Mòd every October.

But the choir also takes part in everything from studio recording and appearances on BBC, to live performance and collaboration on the Celtic Connections festival mainstage and PRS Foundation’s New Music Biennial.

The choir has a core repertoire of traditional Gaelic choral music, but expands that genre by working with a range of musicians including composers Stuart MacRae, Scott Macmillan, singer song-writer Adam Holmes and the choir’s own MD, Mary Ann Kennedy.

Mary Ann is joined by Gaelic Reader Janet MacGregor in leading the choir’s rehearsals on Wednesday evenings throughout the year, complemented by a programme of weekend workshops.

Choir membership is open and inclusive, with a mixture of Gaelic speakers and non-Gaelic speakers, readers of music and ear-learners in the ranks.

Individual learning and preparation is also supported by an online library of printed scores, audio music and language files and part-specific rehearsal mixes, maintained by the choir’s webmaster. The core output of the choir is full SATB line-up, with a women’s chorus for competition, and two autonomous, affiliated male and female vocal ensembles, Trosg and Siaban.
