Red Riding Hood (12) 2/5

Red Riding Hood
Red Riding Hood

I WAS bitterly disappointed after watching this movie. I expected the remake of this famous folk-tale to be dark, sexy and sophisticated – especially as it was directed by Catherine Hardwicke who directed Twilight. But it was lame. The characters lacked lustre and the wolves looked fake.

I suspect the failure of this movie had something to do with it being only a 12 rating. It hinted towards using all the metaphors of red, blood, lust, forbidden love and turning the tale of Little Red Riding Hood into something much darker – a twisted tale. But it fails on all levels because the director never really committed to anything.

The forbidden love story at the heart of this poor movie is boring. It dances around the point of the two characters having some chemistry – but then tails off, remembering its audience is of a younger age.

Amanda Seyfried is perfectly cast as Red Riding Hood with her pale skin and massive eyes – however, even she can’t spice up the cheesy lines.

It’s poor – and on a final note I thought Catherine Hardwicke would be an expert at perfecting the wolves to make them look realistic, given how many star in Twilight. Obviously not.
