Review: Heavenly musical Sister Act raises spirits at Aberdeen's His Majesty's Theatre
ABERDEEN'S prayers have been answered as musical sensation Sister Act visits His Majesty's Theatre this week.
Based on the smash-hit 1992 film of the same name, Sister Act stars TV and stage actress Sandra Marvin (Emmerdale, Waitress) as everyone's favourite nun on the run.
The musical which is direct from London's West End tells the story of disco diva Deloris (Marvin) whose life takes a surprising turn when she witnesses a murder. Placed in protective custody in a convent, the singer is tasked with helping the struggling choir and while she helps her fellow sisters to find their true voices - she unexpectedly rediscovers her own.
The musical arrived at Aberdeen with much excitement - with some audience members even dressing up as nuns - and it certainly did not disappoint.
Before the show, the theatre was lit up with the reflections from disco balls suspended from the stage and the sounds of classic disco songs helped to transport the audience back to the 1970's.
The musical's heavenly cast shone in the roles, particularly in the show's musically stronger second act.
TV and theatre legend Lesley Joseph was fantastic as Mother Superior, the stern leader of the nuns who is initially resistant to the changes around the convent and Sandra Marvin was delightful Deloris, who displayed a perfect blend of comedic timing and vulnerability.
However, the stand out star for me was definitely West End sensation Lizzie Bea who plays the naive and obedient Sister Mary Robert, her solo song The Life I Never Led which spells out the youngest nun's desire to find her own path in life, was a particular highlight and delivered perfectly.
With a perfect blend of tenderness, humour and dazzling disco Sister act is truly second-to-nun.
Sister Act is at His Majesty's Theatre from November 7 - November 12. Tickets are available online: www.aberdeenperformingarts.com, by phone: 01224 641122 at the box office at His Majesty’s Theatre or the Music Hall.
