Highland Council has confirmed there will be a by-election on November 14 to fill the seat left vacant after Richard Laird’s resignation from the local authority.

Mr Laird announced he would be leaving the council on health grounds around two weeks ago and yesterday’s full Highland Council meeting was his last business as a member.

The council has released an election timetable for the Inverness Central seat advising candidates and the public of the next steps.

The delivery of nomination papers will be accepted from September 27 until October 14.

Those wishing to vote by post must be registered by the end of October and voting on the day will be from 7am-10pm.

At the meeting yesterday, colleagues praised Mr Laird for his intelligence, wit and forthright views after seven years of service on the council.
