Campaign to highlight the ‘unimaginable horrors’ the children in Gaza are suffering visits Nairn
An ongoing campaign to highlight the “unimaginable horrors” the children in Gaza are suffering through an art installation is in Nairn today, having already visited Ness Islands in Inverness about three weeks ago.
The work was produced in collaboration with local artists, Art Workers 4 Palestine, involves hanging shoes from trees in a bid to shine a light on the death and suffering of children in the Israel-Gaza war.
Speaking earlier Sana Gilfillan, who helped to organise the art installation, said: “The project is titled All the Children and it is a travelling art installation meant to remember and express solidarity with the 2.4 million children who are suffering unimaginable horrors under the Israeli occupation in Palestine.
“As a mom of two toddlers, I have found the catastrophe unfolding in Gaza very harrowing to witness. It has been cathartic for me and other parents and members of the local community to do our part to honour and show solidarity with the parents and children trapped in this unfathomable situation.
“We are hoping the concept can gain traction in locations around the Highlands through the summer.”
Triggered by the massacre of almost 1200 Israelis and other nationals by Hamas and other terrorist groups on October 7 last year, the conflict has wreaked a terrible toll on civilians in Gaza, the most densely populated area on earth.
The event in Nairn comes just a day after the bodies of five Israeli hostages were recovered by the IDF and after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu defended the war in Washington while saying he would send a delegation to peace talks in Rome.
Accurate casualty figures are difficult to verify but in May the UN reported that 35,000 people with confirmed identities have died in the conflict including 7797 minors, 4959 women and 1924 elderly. The UN did not differentiate between combatant and civilian deaths.
The BBC reported that according to two UN agencies more than 150,000 people have fled the Gazan city of Khan Younis since Monday when the IDF issued an evacuation order.
