Will Highland Council move out of Inverness Town House?

HIGHLAND Council is looking into the possibility of giving up its occupancy of Inverness Town House – a move which could save it £241,000 a year.

Whether the change happens or not is likely to depend on the results of a £5000 feasibility study into the proposals.

Currently, the council pays the Inverness Common Good Fund for rental of the building and adjacent car park so despite the recent successful multimillion-pound refurbishment and restoration of the town house, it could make financial sense for the authority to move out.

Papers prepared for a recent meeting of the city of Inverness area committee stated: “Its use as an administrative hub by the council cannot be presumed to continue indefinitely.”

The feasibility study would aim to make sure it is “used for the principal benefit of the residents of the burgh, with a focus on retaining the town house as a civic hub for the city”.

Officials think the time is right to at least consider whether the council should remain in residence, as plans continue to transform the neighbouring Inverness Castle into a major visitor attraction.
